The Craft

Everything a frame is, decided by hand, five times over.

A hand-built steel frame is not a slower way of making a bicycle. It is a different object, arrived at through several hundred judgements that no process can make on the maker’s behalf.

The difficulty

The knowledge is in the hands, which is exactly the problem.

Ask a maker how they know the brass is about to flow and you will get an answer about colour, and sound, and something that is not quite either. It is real knowledge — it is repeatable, it can be taught, and it is why one frame lasts fifty years and another cracks at the head tube — but it does not survive being written down.

That is what makes this craft fragile in a way that, say, cabinetmaking is not. There are not many people who hold it, the only way to acquire it is to stand next to someone who does for several years, and the arithmetic of those years has stopped working on its own.

It is also what makes standing in a workshop worth doing. You cannot read this. You can watch it.

How a frame is made

Five movements.

Simplified, but not sentimentalised. This is roughly what you will watch on an atelier morning, and roughly what you will fail at in a workshop.

  1. I

    Choosing the steel

    Not all steel tubing is the same, and the difference is not marketing. Wall thickness varies along a single tube — thicker at the ends where it is joined and stressed, thinner in the middle where it is not. Which tubeset, which diameters, which butting profile: these are chosen for a specific rider, and they are the first place a frame becomes personal rather than generic.

    Mitring

    Every tube has to be cut so that it sits perfectly against the curve of the tube it meets. A gap of a third of a millimetre is the difference between a joint that will outlive its owner and one that will not. This is done on a machine, checked by eye, and corrected by hand, and it is where most of the day goes.

  3. III

    Brazing

    The joint is heated until brass flows into it by capillary action — drawn through the gap by heat rather than pushed. Too cold and it will not flow. Too hot and the steel itself is damaged, invisibly, in a way that will matter years later. The maker judges this by the colour of the metal and the behaviour of the flux, in real time, and there is no instrument that does it better.

  4. IV

    Alignment

    Heat moves steel. After brazing, the frame is checked against a surface plate and brought back true by hand — cold-set, measured, set again. A frame that is out by a millimetre will ride subtly wrong forever and almost nobody will be able to say why.

  5. V

    Finishing

    The joints are filed and blended until the transition between lug and tube is continuous under a fingertip. This step is entirely aesthetic and takes longer than most of the others. It is also the first thing anyone who knows will look at, which tells you something about what this object is for.

Two ateliers

Chesini and ZULLO.

Both are Verona workshops. Both sit within Italian Bike Group, the same group as VCC. Neither is a VCC sub-brand, and we are careful to keep them distinct: they have their own names, their own customers and their own way of doing things, and it would be a disservice to blur them into one story because it is easier to tell.


Chesini

A Verona marque with a long history in hand-built steel and a following that is notably international — a good number of the people who own one have never been to the city the badge names. That is one of the things the club is for.


ZULLO

A Verona atelier built around a maker’s own hand, in the tradition where the workshop and the person are not really separable. Frames made in small numbers, because that is the only way they can be made.

For members

What proximity makes possible.

Because the ateliers are held within the same group, access is arranged rather than negotiated. In practice that means four things:

  • Atelier mornings. A small group in a working shop on a working day, close enough to see the flux go glassy.
  • Design conversations. Geometry, tubing, fit and finish, discussed with someone who decides these things for a living.
  • Masterclasses. Two days at a bench learning to make one joint, and understanding exactly how far that is from a frame.
  • Introductions. Where a member wants to commission something and an atelier has capacity, we make the introduction — nothing more, and never as a benefit of membership.
